There are many ways to build a GIS solution architecture.  Therefore open-source solutions offer more flexibility and allow to begin with a lightweight infrastructure, for example a simple browser application plugged on a relational database, and evolve to a complete GIS infrastructure, handling the whole process from collecting data, encode, store and maintain, to the publishing using secured services.

The following sections give an overview of mostly used components for 100% open-source solutions.

Openlayers - GIS inside your browser

Most of our implementations use the open-source librairy "Openlayers" as a basis tool for the implementation of web GIS applications.

This is the most advanced library for designing maps interactions within a browser application.

It can be used either in a "standalone" mode. In this mode, you use existing map services (like OpenStreetMap, MapQuest, ...), or in conjunction with your own servers, exposing GIS services and resources (WFS, WMS, KML, etc.).

All our applications are based on HTML5, Twitter Bootstrap and AngularJS. These components enable to design dynamic and responsive applications that run perfectly within any HTML5 ready device.

Quantum GIS - Open source GIS for experts

When you need a professional tool in order to build your own geographic layers, a browser application might not be sufficient.

Therefore Quantum GIS (QGIS) offers a reliable desktop solution that can be configured precisely for your needs (for example build a vector layer on top of satellites tile pictures, compute areas, georeference complex assets, compute operations on geometries, statistiques, ...).

Quantum GIS provides the ability to use or develop plugin that will render specialized services while managing geographical data.  For example "geocoding", specialized drawing tools (with snapping options, merging of shapes, etc.), 

It can display and manage different data sources (Postgis, Oracle, MSSQL, OWS, WFS, WMS, ...), which makes this software a reliable and efficient editing tool.

Geoserver - Publish your geographical data

Geoserver makes the link between your GIS data stores and the outside world.

It can access most GIS storage structures and exposes your data using standard protocols defined by the OGC (WFS, WMS, WCS).  It is also able to build dynamically tile caches, that reduce the load on your GIS servers and enhance the response time. Aslo it handles layers using different projections and is able to re-project data depending on the queries issued by the client.

PostGIS - Open source GIS storage

Storing geographical data and being able to query it using optimized spatial queries becomes important when dealing with a big amount of data.

PostGIS is an extension to the open-source relational database Postgresql that provides special types in order to store and index geometries.  It is totally integrated to the relational database so that you can build an hybrid system where GIS data is linked to your business data model.
